Conjugation Tables for the Italian Verb Abitare (To Live in)

The verb abitare is a regular  first-conjugation Italian verb (of the largest family and easiest kind) that translates to the English meaning of to live in, to live somewhere, to inhabit or dwell in. Transitive and Intransitive In its true meaning of inhabiting a place or having as ones residence, it can be used as a transitive verb, with a direct object, and it conjugates, of course, with the auxiliary verb avere: La nonna abita una vecchia casa fuori città   (Grandma inhabits a big house outside the city). But abitare is used most often instransitively, which means the action transits indirectly through a preposition, simple or articulated, though still with avere (because it has an outside object, of inhabiting a place): Abito fuori città   (I live outside the city), or, Franca ha abitato sempre in campagna (Franca has always lived in the country). Remember your beginning conjugation families and patterns and your ground rules for choosing the right auxiliary. Abitare or Vivere For the purposes of inhabiting or residing somewhere, abitare can be and is used interchangeably with vivere (to live): Vivo in paese (I live in town), or, viviamo nella vecchia casa di Guido (we live in Guidos old house). How to Check the Accreditation of Any Online College

Accreditation is the process by which an institution—in this case, an online college or university—is certified to have met standards set by a board of representatives selected from peer institutions. An accredited degree from a certified school of higher education will be accepted by other schools and organizations as well as by prospective employers. Proper accreditation for an online degree can mean the difference between a degree that gets you a new job and a certificate that isnt worth the paper its printed on. The two kinds of accreditation are â€Å"institutional† and â€Å"specialized,† or â€Å"programmatic.†Ã‚  Institutional accreditation normally is given to the  institution as a whole, though it doesnt mean that all components of the school are of the same quality. Specialized accreditation applies to parts of the school, which may be as large as a college within a university or as small as a curriculum within a discipline. You can check any online schools accreditation status in less than a minute. Heres how to find out if a school is accredited by an agency recognized by the United States Department of Education: Checking United States Department of Education  Accreditation Listings Go to the U.S. Department of Educations (USDE) College Search page. (You also can check the USDEs accreditation database.) Enter  the name of the online school you would like to research. You dont need to enter information in any other field. Then hit search. Youll be shown a school or several schools that match your search criteria. Click on the school youre looking for. The selected schools accreditation information will appear. Make sure this page is about the school youre seeking  by comparing the website, phone number, and address information you see at the top left  with the information you already have. You can view the colleges institutional or specialized accreditation on this page.  Click on the  accrediting agency for more information. In addition to accreditation status, this information includes the accrediting agency, the date the school was originally accredited, the most recent accreditation action, and the next review date. Checking Council for Higher Education  Accreditation  Listings You may also use the Council for Higher Education Accreditations website to search for accredited online institutions. The process is much the same as with the USDE search, though at the CHEA site you must agree to the terms and conditions  before reaching the search field. Also, the CHEA page provides less information than the USDE page. You also can access a chart comparing CHEA and USDE recognition. Accreditation Doesnt Guarantee Success Accreditation doesnt guarantee that credit hours will transfer to another institution nor assure acceptance of graduates by employers. That remains the prerogative of the school or prospective employer. The Department of Education recommends that students take other steps to determine if the institution will meet their goals, including asking other  schools whether your credits will transfer  or asking possible employers if, for example, the institutions courses will count toward a professional license.

How to Beat the Heat free essay sample

We definitely need a diet to keep our reserves active,† says independent nutritionist Suneet Khanna. Expert nutritionist Shikha Sharma, says coconut water comes as close to the perfect replacement for all the minerals we lose when we sweat. â€Å"The electrolyte combination of coconut water is similar to the plasma in the human body,† says Ms. Sharma. Ms. Sharma says that one common mistake people make during the summers is to assume that the temperature of the food determines whether it’s â€Å"cooling† or not. Something that is straight out of the refrigerator, say, a chilled boiled egg salad, does not necessarily cool the system post digestion,† says Ms. Sharma. However barley, rice, mint, coriander and onions, have a cooling effect on the system once they have been digested, she added. Spicy meat dishes should be avoided if you want to stay cool, according to nutritionists. They say that even though this kind of food might help restock the sodium content, it dilutes the potassium, calcium and mineral content in the body. Scorching summer heat and the sun’s strong rays can be damaging to the skin. â€Å"Moisture from sweat and the constant exposure to sunlight, combine perfectly during summers and the result is a dangerous hub for bacterial and fungal infection,† says Rohit Batra, a dermatologist at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi. Shielding the skin is indispensable, doctors say. But the SPF rating on the bottle of sunscreen is not the only thing to look for. â€Å"SPF or Sun Protection Factor only looks after the Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. One must remember that these constitute only 10% of the Ultraviolet rays entering the earth,† explains Sajiv Kandhari, a New-Delhi based dermatologist. The Ultraviolet A (UVA) rays which are usually less intense, more prevalent and often the dominant â€Å"tanning† rays, are also harmful. Mr. Kandhari recommends a sunscreen with a â€Å"broad spectrum,† capable of protecting the skin from both UVA and UVB rays. To avoid the summer tan use umbrellas, scarves and caps, says Mr. Batra. 3. Spot Early Signs of Heat Stroke. Some of the common symptoms of a heat stroke are body-ache, stomach cramps, headache, nausea, vomiting and high fever. A higher degree of a heat stroke can leave a person â€Å"delirious,† doctors say. But even a mild heat stroke must not go unchecked because it can worsen, warns Mr. M. Paithankar who works at Delhi’s Max Hospital. â€Å"Not only is the consumption of water essential. But, this must be supplemented by salts,† he says. 4. Wear Cotton and Stay On Trend With Lighter Colors. Natural fabrics like cotton and linen are breathable and cooler than most man-made fibers. Fashion experts say that the lighter pastel colors with hints of neon are defining the trend this summer. Avoid anything tight-fitted. In fact, wear an oversized shirt teamed with something tighter,† says Pallavi Das, creative head of designer-wear firm Satya Paul. Think easy and casual to temper the mounting heat, she says. 5. Get Out of The City If You Can. The searing temperatures in the city are enough excuse to plan a trip to the cooler hills. But most destinations are increasingly being overrun by tourists. During the peak summer months of May and June, popular escape spots in the north like Srinagar, Pahalgam, Simla and Mussoorie can be crowded. Ajay Jain, travel author and owner of Delhi’s Kunzum travel cafe, recommends destinations like the Chopta Valley in Sikkim, Abbott Mount in Uttaranchal and Shoja and Tirthan Valley in Himachal Pradesh as places that remain relatively unexplored. But they are further afield than the popular getaways and can be difficult to get too. If hotels in the Himalayas are sold out, Mr. Jain suggests heading down south. â€Å"Coorg [in Karnataka] is perhaps the best all year destination in the country. The weather there is always agreeable,† he says.

African-American Representation In The Media Essays - Black, Color

African-American Representation In The Media In Jacqueline Bobo's article, The Color Purple : Black Women as Cultural Readers, she discusses the way in which black women create meaning out of the mainstream text of the film The Color Purple. In Leslie B. Innis and Joe R. Feagin's article, The Cosby Show : The View From the Black Middle Class, they are examining black middle-class responses to the portrayal of black family life on The Cosby Show. In their respective articles, Bobo, and Innis and Feagin are investigating the representation of race, particularly African American race, in the mass media. The chief concerns of their investigations lie in how African Americans deal with the way these representations portray them individually and their social group as a whole. In this paper I will compare the issues in each study, analyze the larger sociopolitical implications of the media representations and apply a similar framework of concerns to my own reception analysis project. In Bobo's article, the chief concerns of the author are the savage and brutal depiction of black men in the film, black family instability, and the way that black women embrace the film and use their own reconstructed meaning of it to empower themselves and their social group, (90,92). Film as a medium starts out with many potential limitations and problems when it comes to representing a whole race of people. No two people are exactly alike no matter what race they come from so there is no way one film can represent all peoples. Unfortunately, many people believe that a certain depiction of black people characterizes all black people, which is certainly not the case. This is very dangerous because this perpetuates stereotyping and discrimination. The viewing public pays for movies and therefore movie directors have to tailor their product so that the majority of viewers will enjoy, and agree with the ideas behind the film. The majority almost always means white America so even Afric an American based movies are made for white audiences. Because of this, the representations of blacks in the medium of film are almost always white ideas of who black people are, not who they really are. The film The Color Purple has been the center of controversy since it was made in 1985. Many people feel the film is a terrible portrayal of black family life and that it is stereotypical in its depiction of black men as evil and brutal tyrants who imprison and mentally and verbally abuse woman. Consequently, most men despise the film and can not believe that so many women love it. The main purpose of Bobo's article was to find out why black women loved it so much and what they saw as good about the film. What Bobo found out was that though many women loved it, they also saw that there were things inherently wrong with the way black males were portrayed. However, because black females were mostly portrayed in a positive light, the black female respondents felt that the film was good in that respect. According to Bobo, Black women have demonstrated that they found something useful and positive in the film, (101). The women enjoyed seeing a woman rise up against abuse and take control of her life. They identified with the search for power and their own identity. The Color Purple presented a new type of feminism to black women who were used to seeing black female characters depicted as slaves, maids or mammies. Bobo found that though black women were aware of the oppression and harm that comes from a negative media history . . .[they] are also aware that their specific experience, as black people, as women in a rigid class/caste state, has never been adequately dealt with in mainstream media, (102). This was the main reason why the women liked the film so much. They were able to take their own past experiences and use those as a basis for their interpretation of the text. In this way, the black women didn't see the film as all bad, they saw it as a little bit of truth wrapped in a blanket of a few stereotypes and as a touching story that needed to be told. The larger

The Incredible Disappearing LinkedIn Profile - Part II

The Incredible Disappearing LinkedIn Profile - Part II In March, I published an article which now turns out to be Part 1  of this series on the disappearing acts LinkedIn has been playing. I covered the Summary section, job descriptions, contact information, the Interests section, e-mail subject lines, saved searches, alumni and other top navigation items, tagging and notes, and LinkedIn group features. Since then, many people have written to me with questions about how to find additional â€Å"lost† features with the new LinkedIn, so I’m publishing Part II! Here are some of the things you might have noticed have changed or gone missing in the new LinkedIn, plus a correction to the first item. 1. Your summary section. Last month I reported that the first 210 characters (including spaces) are visible when you initially view someone’s profile. It turns out there’s a range of characters that might appear, from about 205 to about 230. Everyone’s profile is different, and it’s not exactly clear why. Fewer characters appear on the mobile app than on the desktop app, so make sure you write a great hook in your first 10-15 words! Here’s what my summary looks like on desktop: And here it is on mobile: Test yours and make it look great! And make sure to put a unique selling proposition in your first 10-15 words so you grab attention quickly. 2. Advice for contacting. There used to be an option under your Contact Information section to write a few lines about whom you want to contact/connect with you and why. It no longer exists sorry folks! 3. Creating and viewing secondary language profiles. Several people have written to me to say they can’t figure out how to add a profile in a second language. Don’t worry – the feature is still there! It has just moved. Check out the right-hand column to find the option to â€Å"Create a profile in another language.† Here’s what the screen will look like: And here’s your list of language choices: What HAS disappeared, at least for now, is the ability to view someone’s secondary language profile directly from their primary language profile. As LinkedIn said to me when I asked about this issue, â€Å"The ability to see other members [sic] secondary language profiles has not been fully re-implemented back into the new user interface.† If you happen to know or strongly suspect that someone has a profile in a second language, I encourage you to Google their name with the word â€Å"LinkedIn† – such as â€Å"Juan Ortiz LinkedIn† – to discover all profiles under that name. If they have an uncommon name you will likely find their multiple profiles. If they have a common name, it will be more difficult. You could also write to the person to ask if they can provide the profile URL for their secondary language profile. 4. Saved posts and suggested reading. LinkedIn has talked a big talk about the option to save articles and get suggested reading, but how do you do it? Both of these options are located on the mobile app only. To save articles on your phone, open the article you want to save and click on the ribbon icon in the upper right. Or you may need to click the 3 dots first: The article will automatically save. See the LinkedIn Help article on  saving, retrieving, and deleting articles on Pulse. For feed preferences, click on the gear to the right of your search bar when viewing your profile to reveal an Account tab and a Feed Preferences option under that. Click on the gear to go here: Click on Feed Preferences to get to this screen: Click â€Å"Follow fresh perspectives† and you’ll be able to follow people who post articles on the topics of your choice. 5. â€Å"Trending Storylines.† LinkedIn has been promoting this feature for quite a while, without mentioning that there might not be anything on your desktop or mobile app that actually says â€Å"Trending.† On my desktop app, the section says â€Å"Suggested for you.† Have you seen a screen that says â€Å"Trending†? I’d love to see what that looks like. Please let me know! 6. LinkedIn Groups. I mentioned in my previous article that while LinkedIn Groups are still around, there’s a lot of talk that they might be becoming irrelevant or extinct. What I didn’t cover is how to find them! They are under the catch-all â€Å"Work† tab: 7. Controlling the order of your sections. You can no longer rearrange your major sections like Summary, Experience, Education, Volunteer Experience, etc. So you won’t be able to customize your profile based on which sections are most important in your individual experience. While on the one hand I am sad about this change, I also think it makes things easier for readers who know what to expect to see where. You still have the ability to rearrange positions within your Experience section IF you have more than one current position or two positions that cover the exact same time period. To arrange your positions, hover over the 4-bar icon under the pencil icon and, if you qualify according to the parameters above, you’ll get a plus sign with arrows that you can click on to drag and drop the position you want to move. 8. Profile Strength Meter – and 100% Complete Profiles You’ll be able to see your own strength meter when you’re viewing your own profile, but you can no longer see anyone else’s profile strength. Additionally, there is no longer such thing as a â€Å"100% Complete Profile.† The best you can do is aim for â€Å"All-Star† status, if you’re not already there, by answering the questions LinkedIn presents to you when you log in. Okay, those are the main items that have come up since March. What else did I miss? Please ask any additional questions you may have about the new LinkedIn redesign. I promise to answer them if there are enough to warrant a Part 3!

Social Imperialism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Social Imperialism - Essay Example The introduction of social imperialism was formerly understood in the late nineteenth century when socialists and the lower-class movement became partners in imperialism. Its foundation has been related to the misery of the 1870s and early 1880s and efforts by regimes to recover economic losses as simultaneously exasperating labor agitation and socialist. Advocates of imperialism like Joseph Chamberlain and Jules Ferry; justified it by reasoning that the fruits of the kingdom would financially support social reform, give solution for the stagnation and unsteadiness of mid-nineteenth-century European economies and improve the dilemma of the poor—â€Å"the cry of the business population,'† ‘n’, Ferry's words--by having the funds for steady employment making goods for confined colonial markets. Hobson demystified such points of view: overseas investment whether in official colonies or informal areas of influence. He disputed exhausted capital from European-dom estic financial system. More contemptuous politicians such as Bismarck merely appealed to regal â€Å"crisis ideology,† using abroad military adventures and a focal point on outside enemies to distract attention from the deficiencies of economic arrangements and domestic politics. Benefitting the pursuit of kingdom enabled the German country to put off the democratization of political supremacy.Perhaps since, unlike Britain, France was in short of a substantial informal kingdom in the mid-nineteenth century.

United Kingdom sports policy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

United Kingdom sports policy - Essay Example Sports have been promoted in the United Kingdom as a modern public sector service by successive governments. (Henry. 2001, 19). Being a competitive activity between individuals, groups and states, it is but natural that sports will come within the purview of state policy for smooth promotion as well as to ensure steady growth of sporting abilities in the country to generate a strong feeling of nationhood through better performance in international competitions. Governments thus invariably indulge in formulating sports policies that will earn laurels for the individual and the country in the international arena. Sports policies are also deemed significant to ensure equity in dispensation to afford equal opportunities for weaker sections of society. Notwithstanding the above, it is commonly noticed that public policy is influenced by practical politics, power relations, resources and technical considerations. (Veal.2002, 11). United Kingdom has been at the forefront of sports over the years. The famous quote attributed to the Duke of Wellington that the Battle of Waterloo was won on the sports fields of Eton and Harrow has justifiably highlighted the importance of sports in British national life. The UK sports policy is contained in Game Plan: A Strategy for Delivering Government's Sports and Physical Activity Objectives developed by the UK Strategy Unit under the British Prime Minister's Office published in 2002. (Game Plan, 2002). The policy and strategy laid down in this document has been followed up rigorously and is reviewed every year. The salient facets are discussed as per succeeding paragraphs. Game Plan: A Strategy for Delivering Government's Sports and Physical Activity Objectives The importance to sports policy in general and the policy document in particular is evident with the Foreword being written by the Prime Minister Mr. Tony Blair. Mr. Blair highlights the significance of sports as a powerful tool to achieve a number of goals for governments and the need for being adequately equipped to take advantage of the means for nation building. (Game Plan, 2002). The Report has been focused as per Blair on the importance of increasing grass roots participation in sports for health benefits so that the current health costs of 2bn a year or 54,000 lives lost prematurely could be cut down. A government - sports bodies partnership is sought to be created to achieve these aims. (Game Plan, 2002). The Prime Minister has also highlighted the need to cut down on sports bureaucracy. The focus is on the younger generation and it is envisaged that at least 75 percent youth should participate in sports in the coming years. The Secretary Of State RT Hon Tessa Jowell has also emphasized the need for greater focus on participation in sports as only 32 percent of adults in England were doing more than 30 minutes of moderate exercise five times a week which is the recommendation of health professionals. (Game Plan, 2002). The disparity in the population with limited participation by the lower income groups and fall in involvement with increasing age has been noted with concern. Ms Jowell has bench marked British performance with nations as Finland and Australia which have a large participation in sports and also one which is increasing with age. Britain's performance has been highlighted as the best in Olympics since 1920, with world champions in more than 50 sports but most of these are not in sports carrying a high profile

Romanticism Essay -- Romantic Movement Essays

ROMANTICISM   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In the nineteenth century, the foundation of American literature had a profound change. This was called from Reason to Romance or Romanticism. With many contributions of famous writers such as Irving, Cooper, Bryant, and Poe composed the stories and poems which all of them had a great value in the American literature. What is the Romanticism and how dies it effect to the American literature? By taking some compositions from these writers, there will be good answers for those questions.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   According to some information in English books, the critics said the name Romantic can be misleading because the Romantics do not necessarily write about the love. The Romanticism can be viewed as an artistic movement, or state of mind, or both. This movement seemed to be reaction against the dominant attitudes and approaches of the eighteenth century. Unlike the eighteenth century, writers who interest in reaction, logic, and scientific observation, the Romantics stressed the examination of inner feelings, emotions and the use of imagination. This seemed to be the first element in Romanticism. It appeals to emotion rather than reason. Also, the Romanticism explores the mysteries of nature and supernatural. It reflects interesting in nature because the Romantics describe their story and poem about America wilderness or countryside or they depicted nature. This element that the reader can recognize clearly in the compositi...

Phenomenal Woman Essay

I’ve read this poem, â€Å"Phenomenal Woman† years ago but I have never forgotten it ever since—such is the power of Maya Angelou’s words. Whenever I feel sad, or experience anything that blows my self-esteem to smithereens, I think about this poem—it is one of the few that can instantly make me feel uplifted and empowered. It stirs the soul and affirms the human spirit. â€Å"Phenomenal Woman† is all about feeling good about oneself. It sends a positive message to women and is a kind of affirmation of the female identity. Upon reading the poem, there is a shock of recognition, the recognition of the identity that all too often lies defeated under the weight of oppressive tradition. The first line, ‘Pretty women wonder where my secret lies, I am not cute or built to fit a fashion model sizes’ pretty much sums up Angelou’s message—that a woman’s true essence isn’t something that can be judged through outward appearances alone. Angelou uses very simple and unsophisticated wording to convey a deep message: that identity and sexuality are not all about the aspects of a woman that she has no control over (her looks) but also about what she feels, and chooses to feel, and in how she chooses to convey her feelings. One can truly be phenomenal if one believes herself to be. The poem does not only apply to women but transcends gender, race, and social status. Angelou’s message is universal, one that touches on the very basic fabric humanity: A person’s worth is not something that is ought to be dictated by society’s standards. The poem makes me love the body I’m blessed with, asserts my identity, affirms my sexuality, and paves the way to a deeper understanding of myself. A woman need not have Barbie’s vital statistics or a perfect bone structure—it’s good to have these characteristics but a â€Å"real† woman is more. Those traits that men â€Å"can’t touch†Ã¢â‚¬â€a woman’s â€Å"inner mystery†Ã¢â‚¬â€however unfathomable, truly makes us special and unique. â€Å"Phenomenal Woman† is a reminder of our power to control our own outlook. We are not mere slaves to circumstance, but participants in the game of life. And the most important thing is—to love myself unconditionally, because I’m a woman. Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman. That’s me.

Is Moral Selfishness A Decent Good Hypothesis - 1091 Words

Is moral selfishness a decent good hypothesis? Moral pride is the regulation that every individual should seek after his or her own self-intrigue only. As per this hypothesis profound quality depends on everybody advancing his or her self-intrigue or narrow minded thought processes. The contention for moral vanity from Altruism perspective, we are not in a position to know the interests of others. Since we can t know other s interests, we can t attempt to help other on the grounds that it is not to our greatest advantage. In any case, we are in a decent position to know our own advantages. At some point, helping other people can be extremely intrusive and debasing to an individual; they may feel they are not capable to look after themselves. These suppositions say that we should do whatever it takes to advance the interests of everybody alike; and that is look after ourselves and nobody else. The interests of others are best advanced if each of us seeks after our own self-interests solely and not others self-intrigue. This contention of not paying special mind to the self-enthusiasm of other is more a charitable contention than a prideful one. Moreover, Ayn Rand s contention expresses that a man has just a single life to live, when we put an esteem on an individual then they have moral worth or then the individual has characteristic and incomparable worth.
